Yoga can help you build a strong core

Believe it or not — yoga is a great way to build a strong core. I’ve done yoga for the last 7 years. I believe it helps my endurance, and greatly reduces my injuries. Many of yoga’s poses build strength through balance, pulling muscles from your inner core to hold you up. This pays off on the bike and the swim. And yoga is an excellent way for athletes to cross-train, as you build muscles that help you during the swim, bike, run of the triathlon. Yoga’s other benefits to triathletes is that the poses stretch hip flexors, shoulders and neck (from long hours on the bike). Plus, yoga is excellent for eliminating a sore lower back.

I’ve found a few Yoga DVDs that cut to the core and focus on strength

  • Power Yoga: Total Body Workout:
Rodney Yee, who has been a teacher of yoga for over two decades, created this 60-minute vinyasa flow yoga DVD as a workout to build your core through balance and strength.
  • baron Baron Baptiste: Journey into Power:
This video will quickly help you build your core and stamina. Baptiste gives very detailed, accurate instructions on placement, noting which fingers of your hand need to be pressing, and which toes should be pushing.
  • shivaabs.jpgShiva Rea - Creative Core Abs:
In this DVD, Shiva takes you through 3 different programs, that range from 7 to 20 minutes, with belly crunches to take you into the pain that will bring you a solid core.
